Pilates — Who, What and Why?
Joseph Hubertus Pilates, 1880 - 1967
"Physical fitness is the first requisite of hapiness. In order to achieve hapiness, it is imperative to gain mastery of your body. If at the age 30 you are stiff and out of shape, you are old. If at 60 you are supple and strong then you are young".
Joseph Hubertus Pilates
The Pilates Method is an exercise technique based on the philosophy and teachings of Joseph Pilates. Drawing inspiration from both eastern and western exercise regimes, Pilates devised an exercise method in the early 1920s that aimed to connect body and mind and stimulate the neuromuscular system.
Focusing upon proper use of breath, controlled yet relaxed movements and a strong abdominal centre, the Pilates Method is an extremely effective and safe form of exercise. Muscular imbalances can be corrected, postural alignments improved and strength and flexibility increased.
"Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure."
